Eco-compatibility, aesthetics and innovation in Architecture BRIO’s Plantation Retreat

What Architecture BRIO designs are not buildings, but spatial experiences. The attitude of the studio, based in Rotterdam and Mumbai, is indeed to bring to life immersive, emotional architecture, that is inseparable from the surrounding space. Each new project corresponds to a new study on the sometimes contradictory interrelationships between that specific landscape and the world of local interiors and architecture. This results in contextual, sustainable design solutions that conform to a constantly changing world. Such is the case with the Plantation Retreat project, located in a breath-taking yet sensitive environmental context on a hillside facing the sea in Mumbai.

The dual nature of the project arises from the panoramic view of the ocean on one side and the architectural disorder caused by newly built villas in landscapes that were until recently unspoiled on the other. For Architecture BRIO, however, it was not a matter of contrasting the presence of these out-of-place constructions, nor of attempting to do so. Instead, the studio wanted to emphasize the profile of its structure, integrating it with the landscape. Not unlike the Portuguese chapels scattered on the rolling hills of the nearby coast of Goa, which in their pure white colour proudly stand out in the space, this retreat was designed to give a comfortable scale to the surrounding landscape.

Aesthetics, alongside eco-compatibility and technological innovation, are an integral part of Architecture BRIO's design philosophy. The aesthetic principle clearly emerges in the silhouette designed for Plantation Retreat, defined by two linear pavilion structures, staggered and oriented towards the sea, to guarantee a splendid view from every angle. Each pavilion is made of natural Dhrangadhra limestone, characterized by a typically ivory hue. The majestic window openings are deeply embedded in this masonry structure, framed by steel and shaded by wooden shutters when the sun is high. Strong architectural expressions, therefore, designed as long space telescopes to bring the sea view closer.

As for the specifics of the residential structure, it fits harmoniously into the landscape in peculiar, alternative ways, so to speak. Indeed, half of the rooms are embedded in a solid hook-shaped base, which also serves as a retaining wall. This base also supports a green terrace filled with vegetation. On the lower level, it forms a semi-open courtyard, facing the blue sea and providing a sense of protection. The project reverberates down the slope, continuing into a series of interstitial landscape elements, such as plinths and stepped platforms. Finally, the covered outdoor living spaces are surrounded by a curved infinity pool, whose sinuous lines echo the undulating modules of the rippling sea.
