How to design the perfect family house? – Casa Vittoria by MGAlab - Giovanni Musica

A house already inhabited by the clients’ family, which needed to be reimagined and redesigned to encounter new necessities. A house that craved space and life. A house that had to become ‘the perfect one’. But what is, after all, the perfect house? It had to be that place, expanded and rethought in terms of layout through a major renovation, that would give the feeling of being at home. This was the design challenge taken on by MGAlab - Giovanni Musica for Casa Vittoria, an apartment in the vibrant heart of Milanese design, between Largo Augusto and Via Durini. The valuable result of a continuous exchange of ideas between the studio and the client, the apartment was not, as often happens, a blank canvas: it was therefore necessary to engage with the existing details, furniture, paintings, and objects. Everything needed continuity in a renewed context, in a living environment that was still their own.

We are in a typical early 20th-century Milanese structure, with high ceilings and large windows. The intention was always to revise the layout to reflect the family’s needs, while maintaining its inherent welcoming character. Therefore, no minimalism, rigidity, or cold stylistic choices, but rather a project with a genuinely familial feel, in tune with the traditionally Milanese architectural history and the vintage design objects already present.

Guided by architect Giovanni Musica, the team set out to meet these requirements. They did so by achieving a harmonious blend of iconic furnishings and vintage pieces, redesigning wall decor, and introducing new furniture elements. Among these are the large grey slate-coloured bookshelf and the white Calacatta marble fireplace, custom-made from the same material as the De Padova coffee table.

The interplay between the client’s two sensibilities, classic and modern, is evident from the entrance, setting the tone for the entire space to come. Here, the original separation between the entrance and living area was removed to create an open, welcoming experience. The spaciousness of this single environment is apparent from this point, enhanced laterally by a sculptural, monolithic staircase – an essential link between the two floors. With its helical shape, it draws attention with its strength, even though it is located off to one side.

Another major transformation was the annexation of the kitchen to the large living area, creating a solid integration between the two spaces. Storage for kitchenware and utensils was placed in a perfectly closable niche. The shape of the space was further emphasized by an island kitchen structure, also in Calacatta marble, but with purple veins. From here, both the ‘operational area’ and the snack area develop, being this latter dedicated to entertaining guests and fostering family conviviality, as explicitly requested by the client.

The fil rouge running through the entire project is the choice of high-quality, luxurious, never ostentatious, materials, for a timeless elegance that looks at the contemporary. The apartment is a showcase of iconic Italian design also in the choice of certain design elements. In the dining area, for instance, we find De Padova’s Tavolo95 in grey stone marble and Cassina’s Pierre Jeanneret chair Capitol Complex, alongside Carl Hansen’s Wishbone chairs. The home’s furnishing philosophy is exemplified by the Chaise Longue à Réglage by Cassina from 1965, “born from the desire of the three designers to place humans at the centre of attention, through the correspondence between form and function of rest, in perfect balance between geometric purity and corporeality”.

As for lighting, iconic pieces are also employed, such as the Arco and Snoopy lamps designed by Castiglioni for Flos. These vintage-inspired fixtures are complemented by more contemporary elements, such as Catellani & Smith Light Stick and DCW Edition lamps.

Materially, the protagonist is Calacatta marble, presented in shades of beige and purple. In addition to the previously mentioned kitchen, it is found in the integrated top basins of the bathrooms, where the marble blends with other textures, fabrics, and bold-coloured lacquers, introduced as focal points in a space dominated by linen hues. Also strongly characterizing the space is the herringbone oak parquet flooring, laid in a French pattern, which harmonizes and envelops the space like a warm embrace, creating a place that truly feels like home.
