Breathing new life into a nearly century-old home is no small feat – but for Carola Pimentel, Founder and Principal of Assure Interiors, it was an opportunity to craft something truly extraordinary. Tasked with preserving the soul of a 1925 family estate while seamlessly integrating modern comforts, Pimentel and her team collaborated with CMA Design Studio Inc. to reimagine the space with a balance of history, function, and effortless elegance.

Designed for a young, art-collecting couple with three children, the renovation was a masterclass in refinement, where every decision – from the neutral yet sophisticated color palette to the thoughtful interplay of European antiques and contemporary design elements – was guided by a deep respect for the home’s heritage. Pimentel’s approach is nothing short of gallery-worthy, effortlessly blending museum-quality craftsmanship with the warmth and livability of a modern family home. From concept to completion, here is what she unveiled about the project’s evolution and the vision that guided every step.

What was your main creative vision for this renovation, and how did it evolve throughout the project?

Assure was entrusted by a young, globally-minded couple of art collectors with three children to transform their recently purchased 1920s Miami home into a serene, light-filled, and highly functional retreat. Our vision was to seamlessly blend old and new – preserving the charm of the original structure while introducing a contemporary addition. The new wing houses the kitchen, family room, laundry, and primary suite, while the historic core maintains the living and dining rooms, a guest suite, and the husband’s office. This thoughtful reconfiguration brought modern comfort without compromising the home’s storied past.

Given that the house dates back to 1925, what historical or architectural elements inspired you the most?

The 1920s architecture served as a guiding thread throughout the design process. We approached the renovation with a deep respect for the home’s original character while sensitively expanding it with approximately 3,000 square feet of new construction. Our goal was to enhance the home’s timeless elegance while making it adaptable to modern living.

At Assure, we are known for breathing new life into historic buildings – carefully crafting interiors that feel fresh and contemporary while remaining true to the structure’s heritage. This project was no exception.

Were there any specific artists, designers, or architectural movements that influenced your approach?

Our work often reflects our love of Art Deco and Mid-Century movements, especially within tropical settings. The clients’ impressive art collection and cherished family heirlooms became integral to the design narrative. We carefully curated and placed these pieces throughout the home, allowing them to shine against a soft, neutral color palette. This tailored backdrop was specifically designed to highlight the artwork while maintaining a cohesive, harmonious atmosphere.

What role did the surrounding environment and the home’s location in Florida play in your design decisions?

The Florida climate and landscape played a pivotal role in shaping our design choices. We selected materials that seamlessly blended with the home’s architectural style while ensuring durability and comfort. A striking new courtyard, adjacent to the foyer, acts as a bridge between the original structure and the modern addition. Expansive glass elements flood the interiors with natural light, reinforcing a sense of openness and connection to the outdoors.

The landscape, designed by Tyler Nielsen, celebrates Florida’s lush beauty. Native and tropical plants provide a rich tapestry of textures and hues, enhancing the home’s relaxed elegance. A palm grove adds a sculptural element, casting dramatic shadows across the lawn – a view that can be enjoyed from the comfort of the home’s interior.

What was the most challenging aspect of balancing the preservation of historical elements with the introduction of modern spaces?

Striking the perfect balance between past and present is always a rewarding challenge. This renovation was no different. Our collaborative reworking of the floor plan introduced a sense of order and fluidity that supports the family’s dynamic lifestyle.

The original social spaces were updated to accommodate both intimate family moments and large-scale entertaining – a reflection of the couple’s international sensibility. Our team thoughtfully blended periods and styles, incorporating European antiques alongside mid-century pieces from France, Italy, and Spain. The result is a series of inviting, livable rooms where sophistication meets every day ease.

Were there any unexpected discoveries during the renovation that influenced the final design?

While the project unfolded smoothly from a technical standpoint, it provided a wonderful opportunity to reimagine and reinterpret the clients’ existing collections. We carefully edited and rehung their artwork, allowing each piece to find its ideal place within the refreshed setting.

One of the most gratifying aspects was striking a balance between the couple’s distinct design preferences. The European husband gravitates toward a more formal, traditional aesthetic, while the South American wife favors a relaxed, comfortable environment. Through thoughtful planning and a curated blend of furnishings, we found a harmonious middle ground that reflects both of their sensibilities.

Looking back at the project, is there a particular space or detail that you feel best encapsulates the essence of the design?

While each room tells its own story, I am particularly proud of how we wove together Art Deco influences with mid-century elements inspired by Miami and California homes from the 1940s. Signature design details – such as large-format flooring, wood-paneled room dividers, and the thoughtful use of natural light – capture the essence of our vision.

If you had to describe this home’s new character in three words, what would they be?

Elegant. Functional. Bespoke.
