Next Place Brera: Curating the Experience of Hospitality to Come – In Conversation with OBMI

At the heart of Next Place Hotel 2026 lies a clear proposition: hospitality is no longer confined to function or form, but unfolds as an evolving, experiential narrative. Nowhere is this more evident than in Next Place Brera, the exhibition’s focal point in Milan’s creative district, where curatorship becomes the primary design tool.

Conceived and led by OBMI under the direction of Jacqueline Tan Co, the space moves beyond traditional exhibition logic. It is not a showcase of isolated objects, but a carefully orchestrated environment shaped by relationships – between elements, between partners, and ultimately between the space and its guests.

“At OBMI, we approach hospitality as something that unfolds over time. A space is not defined in a single moment, but understood through movement, pause, and return. It is shaped by how a guest enters, where they linger, what draws them forward, and what invites them to stay. This installation has been curated with that perspective in mind. It is conceived not as a composition of objects, but as an environment that reveals itself gradually and rewards attention.”

This curatorial stance defines the entire project. Visitors are not directed – they are guided subtly through a sequence of spatial cues. Furniture and lighting are not featured; they participate.

“Furniture and lighting have been considered as part of a continuous experience. Each element contributes to a setting that feels intuitive to inhabit, where comfort is immediate and depth emerges through use. Materials, forms, and placement establish a natural rhythm, allowing moments of quiet discovery to exist within a cohesive whole. In hospitality, these subtleties shape memory. They influence how a space is felt without demanding notice.”

At the center of this spatial narrative sits the collaboration with A Squared – a defining gesture of restraint and clarity.

Rather than competing for attention, the participating brands operate in a shared ecosystem of intent. The curatorial vision ensures that each contribution reinforces the overall atmosphere.

“Around this central gesture, a group of partners has been brought together through a shared commitment to craft, material integrity, and longevity. Each contributes in a distinct way, always in service of the whole. ImperfettoLab introduces warmth through seating and table elements that retain the trace of the hand, grounding the space in a quiet human presence. Pulpo engages with light and reflection through its lighting, sideboards, and low tables, creating subtle shifts in atmosphere throughout the day. Jaipur Rugs provides a tactile foundation, softening the environment and encouraging a slower pace, complemented by Henzel Studio rugs that add further depth and material richness.”

The dialogue extends through additional layers, enriching the narrative without overwhelming it.

“Further contributions extend this dialogue. Kristiina Lassus introduces additional layers of texture through rugs that reinforce a sense of cultural continuity and care. Villari contributes decorative elements that bring refinement and detail at a more intimate scale, supporting moments of pause and observation. Together, these elements reinforce the idea that hospitality is as much about storytelling as it is about comfort.”

What ultimately emerges is a new model of exhibition-making – one that mirrors the future of hospitality itself.

“What emerges is not a collection, but a considered environment shaped through relationships. Each element has been selected for how it contributes to the experience of being there and to the way a guest connects with their surroundings. This reflects our view of value in hospitality design. It lies in the careful orchestration of atmosphere over time, where clarity, comfort, and cultural awareness come together to create a lasting sense of place.”

Within the broader vision of Next Place Hotel – an initiative by Medelhan bringing together global leaders in design, development, and operations – Next Place Brera stands as both manifesto and method. It demonstrates that the future of hospitality will not be defined by spectacle, but by intention: a choreography of experience where curatorship becomes the quiet, decisive force shaping how spaces are lived, remembered, and returned to.
