An internationally renowned designer and interior architect, born in Finland where she completed most of her professional education, Kristiina Lassus has lived in Italy for over twenty-five years. In 2004, she founded her design consultancy studio in Milan, and by 2007, she had launched her own brand, Kristiina Lassus, along with her first rug collection. Her deep exploration of rug production continues today, with a design intensity that has already earned her numerous awards and recognitions. Among these, her collection has received the Red Dot Design Awards, the Good Design Awards, and the Green Good Design Sustainability Awards.

The different cultures that these rugs embody stems from the numerous travels that the creative entrepreneur has undertaken, spanning from one country to another: from Finland to Italy, passing through Australia, India, and up to the Himalayas, in Nepal. It is in this latter country, known for its ancient tradition of rug-making, that Kristiina Lassus’s production has been concentrated for a long time. In spring 2024, two new rug qualities produced in Pakistan and India were also introduced.

The application of traditional Tibetan techniques by skilled artisans, who have passed down this ancient art from generation to generation, is part of the unique craftsmanship and refinement that characterizes the brand’s products. Largely manufactured in Nepal, these rugs are made using different combinations of high-quality natural materials such as Tibetan wool, silk, linen, hemp, nettle, and bamboo silk, adding variations in texture and colour.

The essential design style that runs through the entire collection contributes, along with colour combinations, to the creation of a distinctive and harmonious narrative. Although a common thread of style and quality ties the collection together, each piece is crafted as a unique masterpiece, unlike any other.

The creative process behind the production of each rug upholds values of exclusive, consistent, high-quality, and unique design. The key strength of the brand is its customisation options: most rugs can be tailored in size, shape, quality and colour, taking into account the atmosphere and mood one wants to create for a specific project. The goal is always to create versatile, high-quality, and sustainable rugs.

Regarding the latter, Kristiina Lassus’s production adheres to ethical and environmental standards, and is certified by Label STEP, an organization that promotes fair trade in the rug-making industry. Sustainability, for the brand, means not only natural materials and ecological production processes, but also timeless design and preservation of heritage and artisanal know-how.

The adaptability of Kristiina Lassus’s rugs – with their Scandinavian aesthetic, but always with an eye on Italian luxury to blend both needs – is particularly evident in the interior design projects where they are featured. Among these are some luxury residential interior projects realized by Salvioni Design Solutions, a company that has been active in the high-end furniture design scene for over sixty years. Salvioni Design Solutions caters to the luxury residential market, both in Italy and internationally, working with the best global brands to provide a 360-degree design approach. It is no surprise, then, that Kristiina Lassus is regarded as a key partner for rugs, specifically selected for their quality and sophisticated elegance.

Another example of a successful collaboration featuring Kristiina Lassus’s rugs is the residential project by Onni Interiors in a historic Viennese building. This project is a synthesis of ancient and modern design, encapsulated in the effortless elegance of a 210 m² single-floor apartment in a 1915 building. The original architectural details rooted in its history have been preserved, enriched by a renewed modern aesthetic. The careful selection of design objects, natural materials, finishes, colours, and textures could not exclude Kristiina Lassus’s rugs, which here showcase their versatility, blending seamlessly into authentic interiors that are both understated and bold, always capable of evoking emotions.
