INTERIOR & DÉCOR, but with a twist

Waldorf Astoria Residences Miami: A Sculptural Statement in the Sky

Towering above Biscayne Bay in a bold interplay of geometry and light, the Waldorf Astoria Residences Miami is poised to become a defining feature of South Florida’s architectural landscape. Conceived as far more than a luxury high-rise, this extraordinary structure rises to 1,049 feet – the tallest residential and hotel tower south of Manhattan – and presents itself as an icon in the making.

The building’s dramatic form – nine stacked and spiralling glass cubes – emerges like a contemporary totem, a vertical sculpture against the horizon. Designed by Sieger Suarez Architects in collaboration with visionary Carlos Ott, and featuring interiors by the renowned California-based design firm BAMO, the project is a fusion of engineering prowess and artistic ambition. It doesn’t simply occupy the skyline – it redefines it.

Each of the offset cubes appears to be carefully tilted and rotated, creating the illusion of perpetual motion and lending the building an almost weightless presence. The lower levels begin with a subtle upward tilt, gradually shifting and extending outward as they ascend. This dynamic composition not only lends visual drama, but maximises sightlines, offering residents and guests panoramic views of the Atlantic, the bay, and the ever-changing cityscape.

Wrapped in a reflective glass “skin”, the tower captures and refracts Miami’s tropical light, playing with the shifting colours of sea and sky. From inside, each residence offers a singular visual experience – no two perspectives are quite the same. Kitchens, balconies, bedrooms and living spaces all benefit from the building’s sculptural configuration, with vistas that evolve as one moves through the interiors.

For BAMO, the project was an opportunity to interpret the Waldorf Astoria legacy through a contemporary, elevated lens. Drawing from the brand’s timeless sophistication and classical roots, the interiors blend modern restraint with expressive detail. The firm took inspiration from the building’s celestial feel – residences perched in the sky – and created spaces that feel both uplifting and grounded.

The palette is deeply atmospheric, echoing Miami’s natural transitions. Gentle sky blues are interspersed with golden tones that recall sunlight spilling across stone. In shared spaces, delicate hues of lavender, coral, and shell pink evoke early morning skies, while deeper shades—inky blues and smoky greys – suggest the onset of night. Every material choice speaks to the building’s dual nature: serene yet striking, refined yet adventurous.

Public areas embrace a gallery-like sensibility, designed not merely as thoroughfares but as immersive environments. Here, art becomes part of the architecture – furniture pieces double as sculpture, and installations act as visual anchors in the space. With Miami’s global reputation as a hub for contemporary art and design – further amplified by events like Art Basel and Design Miami – the building’s aesthetic is very much in dialogue with its cultural context.

Within the private residences, the design leans into quiet luxury. Open-plan layouts are tailored for liveability, not just spectacle. Materials have been meticulously selected for both beauty and versatility: cerused oak in rich grey-brown or pale European tones, and a quartet of marbles ranging from luminous statuary white to sultry off-black. The show flat, for instance, pairs bold dark timber with sculptural veining in white marble – an interplay of drama and discipline that feels both urbane and timeless.

Although the Waldorf Astoria brand carries with it a heritage of Art Deco elegance, this Miami incarnation looks forward as much as it looks back. The interiors nod subtly to classicism while embracing a modern spirit, reflecting the vibrant pulse of downtown life outside.

This is not a tower that seeks to imitate what has come before. It aims to push the conversation of architecture and urban living in Miami further – to offer something truly new. With its soaring form, immersive interiors, and a design philosophy rooted in experience and emotion, the Waldorf Astoria Residences Miami positions itself not just as a place to live or stay, but as a landmark of vision and intent.
