HOTELS & RESTAURANTS, beyond mainstream

Timeless by Design: The Evolving Vision of TWS & Partners in the Park Royal Langkawi Resort

Since its early beginnings in 1998, when founder Tonny Wirawan began as a solo practitioner, TWS & Partners has grown into one of Southeast Asia’s most innovative architecture and design firms. Officially established in 2002, the studio is driven by a commitment to creating architecture that transcends trends—spaces that adapt, evolve, and endure. The name TWS & Partners itself hints at this philosophy: a timeless aesthetic rooted in deep cultural awareness, contemporary lifestyle, and above all, client-centered design.

Known for their thoughtful, research-driven approach, the Jakarta-based firm has made its mark on major hospitality and leisure developments across Indonesia and Southeast Asia. From luxury resorts like the AYANA (formerly Ritz Carlton) in Bali to urban residential projects like Setia Eco Park, each TWS project reflects an evolving dialogue between nature, culture, and innovation.

At the helm is Tonny Wirawansuriadjaja – an architect driven by curiosity and a passion for discovery. His vision spans from urban planning to furniture design, always seeking new ways to elevate spatial experience and functionality.

This pursuit of innovation comes to life vividly in one of the firm’s standout projects: Park Royal Langkawi Resort. Located on the pristine shores of Chenang Beach in Malaysia, the resort reimagines the hotel typology by blending poetic design inspiration with sustainable climate strategies.

Park Royal Langkawi Resort: Architectural Elegance Inspired by the Eagle

Set along the pristine shores of Chenang Beach, Langkawi, Park Royal Langkawi Resort is a stunning showcase of TWS and Partners’ mastery in blending architectural beauty with functional design. Drawing inspiration from Langkawi’s namesake—Elang, the Malay word for “eagle” – the resort captures the grace and dynamism of a bird in flight.

This vision comes to life in the resort’s striking façade, where sweeping, curved forms create a textured interplay of light and shadow. More than just a design statement, these undulating surfaces function as natural sunshades, enhancing energy efficiency while adding a sense of movement to the structure. The resort’s elevated U-shaped block is thoughtfully designed to optimise airflow, allowing cool sea breezes to circulate through the spaces, ensuring a naturally comfortable microclimate.

At the heart of the resort lies The Lagoon, a reflective water courtyard that not only serves as a serene focal point but also regulates indoor temperatures. The resort’s layout further amplifies natural ventilation, with open spaces fostering a seamless flow between the beachfront and the surrounding landscape.

Beyond luxury, Park Royal Langkawi Resort offers an immersive experience. The Ocean View Lounge and infinity pool at ground level provide front-row seats to breathtaking sunsets, while the Green Mountain terrace offers a tranquil jogging space. For panoramic ocean vistas, guests can unwind at the Bird Nest terrace or retreat to the fifth-level infinity pool and rooftop garden, designed for relaxation and exclusive events.

Sustainability is woven into every element. Double-loaded rooms on the lower floors maximise energy efficiency, while upper-level rooms offer uninterrupted sunset views. Through fluid design, passive cooling, and eco-conscious planning, Park Royal Langkawi Resort redefines hospitality – where architecture, nature, and guest experience exist in perfect harmony.
