INTERIOR & DÉCOR, but with a twist

The Mediterranean Edit: 6 Retreats to Escape To

Euphoria Spa by DECA Architecture

Nestled at the foot of a mountain beside the UNESCO-listed Byzantine site of Mystras, Euphoria Spa by DECA Architecture is the soul of Greece’s first holistic wellness retreat. Sculpted into the earth, its 3,000 m² architecture dissolves boundaries between nature and experience. Visitors descend into a network of cavernous, elliptical corridors – spaces that oscillate between shadow and light, serenity and intensity. As one journeys deeper, the structure’s core reveals itself: a vertical spine of three concentric cylinders. Light pierces a white, 20-metre well at the centre, illuminating a dark, spherical pool – a symbol of both void and rebirth. Above, a spiralling stairwell rises through four levels of sensorial rituals, from the calming Tepidarium to the purifying Byzantine Hammam. Water, stone, heat, and silence conspire to draw out catharsis. Higher still, monastic treatment rooms and luminous gathering halls emerge amidst cypress treetops. With textured concrete façades mirroring the forest’s palette, Euphoria Spa offers more than healing – it offers elemental, spatial poetry.

Tucked among olive groves and cedar pines on Montenegro’s Adriatic coast, Villa Miločer at Aman Sveti Stefan by Denniston Architects is a serene and storied retreat, offering a rare blend of royal heritage and unspoilt nature. Reopened in July 2023, this former summer residence of Queen Marija Karađorđević is once again welcoming guests into its elegant embrace. With just eight refined suites – some boasting Juliet balconies and sweeping sea views – the 19th-century villa is ideally suited for private hire, creating an intimate backdrop for meaningful celebrations or restorative escapes. At its heart, a grand dining room and wisteria-shaded terrace open directly onto King’s Beach, where pink sands meet emerald waters.
Exclusively for villa guests, the nearby Aman Spa is a sanctuary of stillness nestled on Queen’s Beach. Here, hydrotherapy suites, secluded treatment rooms and a light-filled fitness centre offer space to recharge, while wild Montenegrin herbs infuse every ritual. For those craving discovery, the retreat is a gateway to Montenegro’s wilder side – UNESCO-listed towns, tranquil lakes, and bird-filled wetlands. From ancient streets in Budva to the silent serenity of Lake Skadar, Villa Miločer is not just a place to stay – it’s a place to feel deeply connected, both to yourself and to the soul of the land.

Once a 17th-century convent nestled in the serene hills of Provence, the Couvent des Minimes has been masterfully reimagined by Geneva-based de Planta Architectes into a 5-star retreat of rare elegance. This ambitious project blends heritage and modernity, breathing new life into a site steeped in history. Respecting its monastic roots, the architects preserved key architectural features—church, cloisters, and cells – while introducing contemporary touches, including a striking 2,500 m² spa and a green-roofed extension that mirrors the region’s terraced restanques. Every detail, from the 49 bespoke suites to the interiors enriched by local artisans, celebrates Provence’s natural palette and craftsmanship. The project also champions sustainability, incorporating geothermal energy, water-saving gardens with over 11,000 plants, and eco-conscious materials – earning it the Mediterranean Sustainable Building Label. With its tranquil atmosphere, gourmet dining, and a design that harmonises past and present, the Couvent des Minimes stands as a radiant example of architectural transformation and sensory retreat.

Opening summer 2026, OKU Bodrum by OKU Hotels brings a breath of calm to the northern coast of the Bodrum peninsula, offering an escape shaped by nature, simplicity, and a sense of place. Tucked between craggy hills and the Aegean’s deep turquoise, this cliffside retreat keeps things intimate with just 58 rooms—many with private pools—where soft, earthy interiors meet local stone, reclaimed materials, and subtle Turkish touches. Wellness here is woven into the rhythm of the day: slow mornings on the yoga terrace with sweeping sea views, afternoons spent in the hammam or dozing in a beachside treatment cabana. The atmosphere is low-key but curated, from the open-air spa to the laid-back pool deck and its sunken lounges. Food plays a big part too – whether it’s fresh, local fare by the water, or Japanese-inspired plates at TEYO, OKU’s signature fusion spot. A private jetty opens the way for sea adventures, but this is mostly a place to switch off, breathe deep, and stay present.

Kēpos by Goco Spa in Daios Cove by ELASTIC

Set above the shimmering waters of Crete’s Daios Cove, Kēpos by Goco is more than just a spa – it’s a spatial journey into stillness, inspired by myth and reimagined through contemporary design. Created by ELASTIC, the newly transformed 2,500-square-metre retreat takes its cue from the legend of Ariadne’s thread, guiding guests through a labyrinth of calm where textures, light, and form shift like a slow, meditative breath. From the moment you step inside, design becomes a quiet guide: handwoven rugs, sculpted ceramics, and stone-lined walls lead toward candlelit treatment rooms and a hanging garden atrium where shadows drift gently across the floor. There’s a rare rhythm to the space – materials change subtly, moving from rough to smooth, opaque to translucent, always inviting the guest deeper in. At its centre, a firepit anchors the spa’s heart, where rituals unfold in stillness and privacy. Kēpos isn’t about escape – it’s about returning, gently, to yourself. A modern sanctuary where design and wellness are inseparably intertwined.

Terme di Saturnia by THDP

Tucked within the rolling hills of southern Tuscany, Terme di Saturnia Natural Destination has long been a place of elemental power and quiet transformation—its healing spring waters bubbling up unchanged for millennia. Now, a sensitive redesign by THDP renews that timeless sense of wellness with thoughtful, retreat-focused spaces that respond to the natural rhythm of Saturnia itself. Centred around the iconic spring pool, the newly imagined 1919 Restaurant and adjacent winter garden dissolve the boundaries between indoors and out, drawing light, colour, and atmosphere from the surrounding landscape. Gentle hues – terracotta, olive, dusty blue – mirror the region’s palette, while handcrafted details, like pine forest murals and Tuscan terracotta lighting, bring a tactile, grounded quality. A serene new relaxation lounge extends the spa experience, where fire, water, and air converge: poufs encircle a central hearth, swings sway towards the steaming pool, and curtains flutter in soft tones of rope and sand. Here, every element supports reflection and quiet renewal – an elegant update rooted in the resort’s deep connection to nature.
